Popular Golf Competitions at Torreon Bring Fun and Fellowship

3 Min Read

Tucked in the tall pines of the White Mountains, Torreon is known for its beautiful forest backdrop, abundant wildlife, and its award-winning golf courses, Tower and Cabin.

Featuring lush, rolling fairways, rock outcroppings and seven lakes throughout the course, Tower offers distinct challenges on many holes. Conversely, the Cabin Course offers a tighter and tougher experience with 7,184-yards of elevation changes and hazards to test golfers’ accuracy. Both courses offer novice and scratch golfers a challenging outing with plenty of scenic views throughout all 18 holes. The combination draws golfers from far and wide to Torreon’s frequent summertime golf tournaments.

According to Assistant General Manager Caleb Blass, the major golf events at Torreon are typically the most popular. These include the Ladies Member Guest (aka Diamonds in the Rough), Men’s Member Guest (aka Deuces Wild), the Member-Member Tournament as well as both Torreon Men’s and Ladies Golf Association events.

The growth and popularity of Torreon golf tournaments can be credited, in part, to word of mouth.  “Many people, including our longtime members, will talk to the new members about the events and how fun they are,” said Blass. “Many times after the Deuces Wild for example, I have heard the comments like, ‘you guys know how to run a Member Guest’ and ‘this is the best event I have ever played.’”

“There are a lot of factors that make events great, but you have to have what I call “wow factors” to really make the event great. This includes everything from our food and beverage display to our special events like putting contests, chipping contests, long drive challenges and Deck Shot event. The Deck Shot is a platform that our team has built to hit shots off the back patio onto #18 Tower Green. It’s a great event and something different that defines our event at Torreon. It’s custom and special to our facility and our members and guests all love it!”

The value members and guests get when playing a tournament at Torreon is also notable. Blass said if an event is priced where players and golfers can get the best “bang for their buck,” they typically will participate. “If golfers pay a certain amount, they want to see some type of return on the entry fee, so providing an awesome tee gift like golf balls, towels, Yeti’s, new golf shoes, golf jackets, and endless other options makes a difference.” Special events could include something out of the ordinary like a cross country golf event where a special course is set up making it different than normal. He said the major events like Deuces Wild have so many extra factors and special events which contribute to it selling out every year.

Offering continuous successful tournament experiences for Torreon members and guests requires detailed planning and execution. “A successful event is from start to finish and never really stops in my opinion,” said Blass. He said any successful event goes through a planning and preparation stage starting with setting the date, getting participants to sign up, running the event and making sure all special events run smoothly and efficiently as well. The key is making sure every point of the event is successful and efficient while having the best interest in the members and their guests. Checklists and BEO’s are a big part of these events. We want to make sure every team member and staff member knows the importance of details for each event. They must be fully invested and committed for the entirety of the event. Just as important is the follow-up at the event’s conclusion making sure you have detailed notes about any changes or adjustments needed for the next tournament. And then the process starts all over again.
