Torreon Golf Club welcomes a new Director of Agronomy, Andrew Pawlak, to Torreon. Agronomy is the science of crop and soil production and management. Pawlak was most recently the Golf Course Superintendent at White Mountain Country Club.
Pawlak said he is excited about ensuring the golf courses at Torreon are the best courses in the White Mountains.
“I am also looking forward to building a team of people that care about what they are doing and work every day to accomplish our goals,” Pawlak said.
Pawlak was born and raised in the White Mountains and graduated from Blue Ridge High School. He started working on the golf course grounds crew at White Mountain Country Club during the summers in junior high and high school and decided to make a career in the golf industry. He studied Plant Sciences at the University of Arizona.
“I chose to study plant sciences because I knew I wanted to get into the golf business after working at a golf course during the summers through high school,” Pawlak said. “My dad was a golf course superintendent, and I followed in his footsteps.”
After college graduation, he moved to Iquitos, Peru, for four years, where he met his beautiful wife, Rosemary. In 2008 he returned to the White Mountains and was the Assistant Superintendent at White Mountain Country Club for 11 years, before taking a job at Playa Grande Golf and Ocean Club in the Dominican Republic.
In 2021 he returned to Arizona and was most recently the Golf Course Superintendent at White Mountain Country Club.
Pawlak said golf courses are green spaces where people can get outside and enjoy God's creation.
“The part that I like most about my occupation is working outside in a beautiful environment every day,” Pawlak said. “I also enjoy the aspect of creating an agronomic plan, executing that plan, and then seeing the results on the golf courses. Torreon is special because the course layouts are very good, so we have a good foundation to build on and have two outstanding golf courses.”
Andrew has two children, Jeremiah and Annabelle. Some of the things that he enjoys doing are woodworking, hunting, and fishing. He has also recently started learning to play the acoustic guitar.
