Five Top Hikes Near Torreon in Show Low, Arizona

200 miles of scenic trails await exploration year-round from Torreon members and visitors within the crisp White Mountain air. Whether you’re taking a break from the golf course, or seeking a true trek through the surrounding Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, there’s a perfect trail for you in and around Torreon in Show Low, Arizona. Below are our favorite five, but check AllTrails.com for more resources.

  1. Buena Vista Trailhead

This ten-mile trek will get your heart pumping while your mind wanders. This is a very popular trail for birding, hiking and horseback riding and is known for a wide variety of wildflowers in the springtime. The best time to visit is in the summer months when the mud is at a minimum, however, there will likely still be mud pockets around. Be sure to download the map as this trail crisscrosses with other ATV trails and it can get a little confusing.

Distance from Torreon: 3.6 miles

  1. Timber Mesa Trail

Give yourself plenty of time to explore this 7.6-mile loop in the Apache Sitgreaves Forest. Considered moderately challenging, most hikers take close to three hours to complete. The best times to visit are April through September. It gets cold after that and there’s a chance the trail will be covered in snow.

  1. Los Caballos Trailhead

Be sure you pack a lunch and plenty of water for this 14.6-mile loop. This trail is considered moderately challenging and will take the better part of the day to complete. Great for hiking and backpacking and sure to be a good workout. Be sure you keep your eyes up as wild mustangs are known to frequent the area, hence the name of the trail.

Distance from Torreon: 3.4 miles

  1. Show Low Bluff Trail

At just a mile long, this is a great trail to walk off dinner and take in the fresh air of the mountains. Like many of the trails in the area, dogs are welcome, but here they can even enjoy space to run off leash in some areas. This trail is unique in that there’s a small stream running alongside much of it, making for a picturesque scene. Considered easy, this trail is great for multi-generational families to enjoy.

Distance from Torreon: 5.2 miles

  1. Mogollon Rim Trail

This easy .8 mile out-and-back trail gives you the escape you need without the time commitment many other hikes require. Great for walking, running or hiking, there’s plenty to see in a short distance. Be sure you stay on the path as this trail is on private land but is accessible through public easements. The path is paved making it easier for all generations of hikers. The views of the breathtaking forest below you make this hike a must-do.

Distance from Torreon: 8.7 miles

Different trails may enjoy light snowfall in the winter, so be sure to check the weather and altitude to pack and prepare appropriately. It’s best to never hike alone, and be sure to let someone know of your planned hiking route and anticipated return time so they can alert authorities if you experience an emergency. Enjoy exploring scenic northeastern Arizona.
