Show Low in the winter is one of Arizona’s hidden gems. With a mild four seasons throughout the year, there’s always the perfect amount of snow come wintertime that brings the opportunity for all sorts of fun outdoor activities. Against the backdrop of the breathtaking White Mountains, you’ll find your own adventures to embark on when you choose to stay at Torreon in Show Low.
Skiing and Snowboarding
It's not a trip to the White Mountains without a visit to Sunrise Park Ski Area, located on the White Mountain Apache Reservation. With 65 trails on 3 different mountains, skiers of all skill levels can have a fun time. Double, triple, and quad chair lifts and rope tows shuttle 15,000 skiers per hour. Depending upon snowfall, the season extends from mid-November to early April.
Snowshoeing
When you’re not busy flying down the slopes, you can experience the many great trails that Show Low has to offer with your snowshoes. With the snow forming a crust from warm winter afternoons and freezing nights, the conditions are perfect to practice your snowshoeing. Trekking with them takes about twice as long as a normal hike, but the Creek Trail, Severnson Wildlife Trail and White Mountain Trail System all offer a beautiful experience, with a bit of a workout to match!
Sledding
For those who prefer a tamer winter activity, Show Low offers several great areas to grab the kids and enjoy a fun day sledding down the hills! Park Pineway Plaza on South White Mountain Road is the most notable, but the area offers countless hills to play on.
Snowmobiling
The White Mountains are home to two great locations for snowmobiling: one at White Mountain Adventures in Alpine and the other at Acorn Lodge in Greer. Both are just an hour drive from Torreon, and feature snowmobiling, skiing, tubing and sledding.
Fool Hollow Lake
Take a walk around a beautiful lake in the middle of the world’s largest contiguous belt of ponderosa pine forest. Witness the serene Northern Arizona winter landscape, with snow covered trees, crisp air and a variety of wildlife.
