The White Mountains
The White Mountains
The recreational wonderland known as the White Mountains features one of the larger stands of ponderosa pine in the world. Further complementing that impressive attribute is 600 miles of streams, 40 sparkling clear lakes and nearly 200 miles in trails that can be actively used by outdoor enthusiasts. And Torreon is your gateway to it all!
There is nothing short of things to do in the White Mountains, regardless of the weather. Arizona’s largest ski area, Sunrise Park Resort – with 11,000 ft. Mt. Baldy – is a popular locale for downhill skiing and snowboarding. Hiking throughout the White Mountains can be a year-round experience as its trail system of 25 to 30 interconnecting, multi-use loops stretches from the eastern edge of the community of Vernon to the western town of Clay Springs. Cross-country skiing and snowmobiling are also high on people’s "to do” list when they are in the White Mountains. Snow-shoeing, ice fishing and horse-drawn sleigh rides are also preferred all-weather pursuits, as is one of the area’s most popular activities, mountain biking. With nearly 120 miles of uninterrupted trails, bikers can pedal for hours without ever seeing a car or a truck. It’s this kind of experience that draws world-class triathletes to the White Mountains to train for their next competition. With the high altitude coupled with the rugged terrain, high performance athletes demand the rigors of the land to propel them on to improved conditioning. Peaceful and serene mountain streams nestled quietly throughout the region lends itself to some of Arizona’s finest fishing outlets in the Apache Sitgreaves National Forest, Arizona State Parks and the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. Hunting and camping are very popular as well. For those less adventurous and just looking for shopping or sight-seeing venues, antique stores are prevalent in the area as are historic pioneer homes and Native American artists and craftsmen. As the sun sets on the White Mountains and the nighttime skies radiate with a multitude of stars, excitement can heat up with big-name entertainment and casino gaming.
The White Mountains… For those who love the outdoors, it doesn’t get any better than this. And for those who want the total White Mountain lifestyle, it doesn’t get any better than Torreon.
